Copyninja Street FD - GT3 Build

Got a new air filter template mocked up to see if i had the space in the engine bay! 9" height by 7" diameter, should be enough to flow 600+ rotary hp!
The difference is staggering compared to the HKS shroom filter!

Just about fits and clears the bonnet when closed. I like how it sit in the bay as there is a cold air feed right under the filter. I'll need to make some ducting to make it all work.

Trying to reacquaint myself with the rx7 and getting up to speed with doing 100-200kph runs again. The first thing i noticed was the fear factor...i was letting off too early!

Managed to get 1 run in before it all went pear shaped with the intake pipe failure.

Looking good, but did you borrow @Spendyrx phone to film it?

I've been trying to Embrace the Eternal Symphony of Tuning & Constantly Evolving the RX7's Soul!!

However, although for no lack of trying on my part - the dragy gps device (remains a cruel mistress on the 100-200 km/h (62-124 mph) acceleration runs.). It refuses to give me that low 6s run.

3rd gear acceleration to 8000rpm and beyond all great, no issues. Feels fun and Fast!
4th gear beyond to 7300rpm all great but beyond 7400rpm, my afr's start to shoot rich....? It feels like the acceleration has hit a wall..or suddenly not very keen to accelerate. It's soo frustrating and annoying! The good thing is all my runs are now firmly in the mid 6s range so there is some consistency and reliability there, even though the ambient temps are much hotter than winter when i was previously testing!

I pushed on in 3rd to get my boost settings correct and at 22psi now. So wont be long before i have some dragy data to share! No idea if it will be faster as 4th just wont play ball. I'll get there eventually!!

I got an excessive lim (from @Ceylon) to go on soon and I've made it a top priority to go overkill and get as much heat shielding between the down pipe, the exhaust manifold and the lim. (Currently there is none, except for an HKS heat shield. The down pipe is inches away from the lim and the mani right under it haha!)

Can’t beat a set of Rays. What sizes did you go for as they fit superbly?
They are 18x10 et 40 all round which I feel is near perfect for the stock bodied rx7!

I got a bit nerdy and also weighed em in comparison to the old setup.

Old but gold Advan RG2s in 17x9 with Michelin pilot sport 4 tyres in 245 40 17s weighed 41 lbs each in their square setup.

New TE37 SL with michelin cup 2 fronts in 245 35 18s are 39.9 lbs, surprisingly a touch lighter. Genuinely was not expecting them to be lighter than the 17s!! Absolute shocker!!

Rear TE37SL in cup 2, 265 35 18 are 43lbs. As expected a couple of lbs heavier...but well worth the extra width and bigger tyre.

The weather has been absolutely delightful lately, and I've taken the opportunity to venture out and assess how well my car performs in hotter conditions. I've made a conscious effort to maintain objectivity throughout the process (subjectively its feels really fast...deceptively quick for this platform, fun and engaging. Lots of drama, theater and excitement). With the temperatures soaring to nearly 30*C, I pushed my car to the limit, reaching up to 20psi boost about 1.37bar. To gauge its performance, I measured the time it took to accelerate from 100 to 200 (km/h), and I must say, the results were intriguing.

Clocking in at a time of 6.57 seconds, my latest run was a mere 0.01 seconds faster than my previous personal best. While this improvement may seem minuscule, it holds great significance as the car still performs admirably in hotter heat soaked conditions. To truly gauge the impact of temperature on the car's performance, I plan to conduct further tests during cooler nighttime conditions. I'm curious to see how the slight drop in temperature affects progress, as recorded by the trusty dragy device.

Few weeks ago I attempted to install the excessive lower intake mani. This was sold to me as a brand new piece from a well known forum member but two of the runners had severe cracks and the outside has what can only be described as a repair. Unfortunately I purchased without inspecting, rookie error and feel mega stupid for doing so!

To me it looks crazy defective so I requested a refund from the seller, which was denied as he deemed it was perfectly fine to run like this or sell on if I was unhappy with the quality. I complained to Excessive about this and fair play to them, they are sending me a new replacement manifold as they confirmed this one is a defective piece.

Pics below to confirm the shocking quality. My 30yr old oem manifold runners are a million times better than this piece of crap.

Also thought this was a great time to inspect the Asnu secondary injectors to see how they've been holding up. The answer is not great...the o rings have perished....and one of the caps is missing! So these have been sent back to ASNU to see what their thoughts are and next steps in terms of prevention of this issue again.

IMG-20230604-WA0038.jpg

The oem 850cc primaries looked fine for the visual inspection but again the orings had perished on them as well.

I know I've been doing a lot of 100-200kph runs...but i didn't expect this much damage to the o-rings.

Next steps are to get Asnu to replace or propose a new injector, which wont fail like this one did or move to ID injectors if asnu cant sort it out.

I'm also thinking of retiring the g35 1050 turbo....and move up to a g40 1150 before the year ends and move to a more consistent charge cooling setup and retire the air to air cooling setup. Watch this space!

While the FD takes a well deserved summer break for a few weeks.

I welcomed my 2nd E92 M3 to the family.

The M3 has such beautiful refined performance. No matter how much I fine tune my fd. The idle and light throttle response below 1500-2000rpm is buttery smooth compared to my FD. The FD isn't too bad in the low cruise and light throttle idle areas but the M3 V8 is a whole other league of buttery smooth low end response and refinement.

Absolute Joy to be back into another V8 M3 alongside my RX7. Two wonderful drivers cars.

For laughs and giggles I also tested the E92 M3, which is bone stock, except for a catback exhaust which does nothing for power lol.. just there for enhanced sound!

For comparison this is near enough the time my unoptimized FD tune ran with 12psi boost! The NA M3 isn't a numbers car but its mighty fun and incredible in the corners, like the FD its got great cornering balance but far easier to drive and extract performance out of! This goes to show just how amazing the 991/992 Porsche GT3 NA cars really are sprinting from 100-200kph in the low 7s range without boost!

ASNU went above and beyond by replacing both secondary injectors with brand new ones, demonstrating their exceptional commitment to customer service!

However, to my surprise, the almost 30-year-old OEM 850cc secondary injectors, which I have been using as primaries in my setup, delivered fuel with even better than expected fuel delivery, flow, and spray pattern. ASNU conducted thorough testing and confirmed that these injectors can still be utilized without any loss in performance. This unexpected outcome highlights the outstanding quality and longevity of the OEM injectors, further enhancing my confidence in their continued use.

The ASNU 1500cc Performance Injectors have a multi-hole orifice cap, cut using the latest laser technology for greater accuracy and repeatability. Using this technology allows the injectors with specific spray patterns and flow rates. The 1500cc 14-hole orifice cap on my 1500cc injectors exhibit a remarkable 25* spray pattern, ensuring superior fuel distribution and atomization. This outstanding characteristic not only enhances overall engine performance but also offers the added benefit of alleviating stress on the ignition system. By providing such exceptional fuel dispersion, these injectors contribute to a more efficient and effective combustion process, resulting in an optimally functioning 13b for all those 100-200 runs!

The outcome is truly exceptional, with Excessive and ASNU demonstrating remarkable care and customer service. Based on my own incredibly positive experience, I wholeheartedly recommend these companies to all RX7 owners.

The FD will be back up an running next weekend....looking forward to the results with the new Excessive LIM and ASNU injectors.
