Copyninja Street FD - GT3 Build

Got the car back today with the new 4" DP and exhaust system. Told long life exhausts, I need max ground clearance, zero restrictions and to make it as quiet as possible and they delivered all accounts. It is a lot quieter than my old exhaust system, which i miss already. This is more grown up...but with all the flow.

Time to start testing again and get into the 5s range for 100-200kph! Hoping it's possible...but only one way to find out.

Couple of vids with the new zaust.

New low boost is doing better than expected. I tried to make 14psi consistently do high 6s range...but dragy said no 😂...it is such a cruel mistress!! Regardless im very happy with the consistent, reliable and repeatable performance with the new low boost setting. Its fun, fast and very additive. Its not so fast that you're white knuckling while driving...but just right....like that balance where its just edging you on 😌!

Some more boring exhaust videos

After a bit of trial and error and a decent heavy duty mount i'm finally happy with the potato cam placement to record future dragy runs.

Progress on the 4" system is not going as swiftly as I would have hoped.

However, I managed to record the 6.58s 100-200kmh run on the old zaust when testing without the dragy overlay. Also found an interesting slope correction meter which predicts if this was done on a flat surface the time would be in the 6.7s range.

100-200 Midnight Club in Mexico 😂

Mega cold night and perfect boost weather. Unfortunately neither of us could hook up for a clean run.

Gtr smashed a 100-200kph in 3.9s! That thing is ridiculous. Makes my 6s runs feel slow 🐌 😑!

Its been mega wet since....so havent had any more chances to try...but i can feel that 5s run calling my name.

To summarize as the year comes to a close, I feel the 4" down pipe and exhaust system on my setup was a worthwhile upgrade. Looking at my own results on the previous setup
14 psi ran the 100-200kph in - 7.67s
15 psi ran the 100-200kph in - 7.38s
Both already very respectable times compared to modern cars.

However, 1bar/14.5psi boost now runs a personal best for the 100-200kph sprint in 6.95s, which is a worth while gain.

Going up hill on the same setting. Fully optimized the G35-1050 on a street port is comfortably and consistently hitting low 7s to high 6s range at just 1bar boost. I was unable to achieve this pace previously. Looking at my data conservatively it is a gain of 0.27s in a manual car, which is significant considering i'm not running any additional boost.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the FD and the results this year.

Next year the plan is to visit SPA on 19th October. The trackday is already booked and perhaps drive to Nur after.

Also got a couple of Drag racing days booked at pod to see if i can setup the launch/boost by gear strat to hit those 10s 1/4m runs. Beyond that I'm already very pleased with the reliability of the overall package.

Got this from @Francob/ Mark earlier in the year as he's gone in a different direction for his build.

This may go on the fd at some point next year...to keep chasing dragy optimizations with the lowest boost threshold/max out the rpm range top end...see if power/tq holds to 8500rpm - 9k rpm. The G35-1050 may struggle top end but it has has performed miracles with hardly any boost being run through it which is very promising.

The slower progress on the 18+psi setting and above is a gremlin with my ignition system and also me being away on hols from Early December to Mid Jan which means progress wont take place until end of Jan/Early Feb. I really want to see what the G35 1050 can really do at 22-24psi.

Been following your build for a while, and always really good to see a beauty monty blue! can I ask is that a real amemiya front bumper?

Thanks dude, Its one of my fav combos, monty blue and gold!!

The front bumper is a rep, I got it off ebay many moons ago (knightracer i believe). One of my fav aftermarket front bumpers for the FD.

Focus is to get the performance into the 5s range for 100-200kph consistently. Then full interior overhaul (recaro pole positions/sportser CS will be the seat of choice) and start looking for a gen re front, side skirts and hood. Although sometimes when I look at this pic, i feel the OEM hood looks perfect...just needs some gen re skirts, front end and street rear diffuser! The build aesthetically still has some progress to be made.

It works so well dude, monty blue is such a versatile colour, the depth and panel lines just melt my brain 😂the alloys are a bit of beauty too!
Well that fully answer my question as that is what I’m looking at as it’s also my favourite, and also will aid my single oil cooler compared to the 92 bumper 😂

Always good to keep setting goals! I’ve got my interior ready but getting the car driving is more of a priority 😂, I did look at the poles also had a look at spgs, you’ve got expensive taste! Same! I do like the Oem contours of the bumper however I feel the need for additional cooling so I’m inbetween!

The main point is you’re nailing the consistency and driveline!

The green flip in the sun is unbelievable. It always surprises me that its an OE colour from Mazda.

Do it, the re front really updates the 92/99 spec front ends to a more modern aesthetic and is still timeless and elegant. Re def has more air and cooling compared to the 92/99 spec bumper. Plus with the front under diffuser my car is way more stable/composed at higher speeds. Its likely adding a small element of downforce/drag compared to OE. I probably wont ever go widebody because im too scared to cut my rear arches. Plus in the future if i ever want to revert to stock, its just a case of front bumper, skirts and oe rear wing.

I've tried different seats over the years and the recaro poles/cs in my previous cars/mates cars were some of the best/most comfy seats i'd ever sat in. I bought some cheaper sparco QRT rev/Qrt-r and returned them because it was not the same, close but no cigar. Plus investing in a good pair of used recaros is as good as money in the bank imo!

Yh touchwood, I've had a lot of happy motoring miles in the fd. Its a blessing when the drive train is working well. You can focus on other aspects of the build and plan stuff like track and drag racing days 😅. Be good to see yours up and running soon!

And to think, most people back in the day would paint over a monty! Sad idiots!

Met up with a mate to get the rx7 weighed/corner weights checked.

Mazda HQ?! 😂
IMG-20230128-WA0012.jpg

Full fat wet weight at 1231 kgs, this settled to 1230 kgs after a few mins! The BWG was off but i had a 7kgs pc680 battery put in the boot in addition to my optima red top to make up
IMG-20230128-WA0016.jpg

With me in the drivers seat and a full tank of fuel it weighed in at 1312 kgs. The weight distribution was fairly good as it was. If i was doing serious track days I would change the balance and get the front left tweaked a touch. However, for the dragy runs im happy with a full tank of fuel a good portion of weight is on the rear wheels which helps the dragy times and overall traction. Plus accelerating will push weight further back wards and keep it there. Overall very happy with this.

Update on whether the 4" down pipe and full 4" exhaust helped performance?

Eliminating the manual gear change and focusing on the 160-200kph time from the 100-200 dragy data posted above for all the runs.
The best run so far at 17psi. So 6.58s - 3.58s = 3.0s 160-200kph time.

screenshot_20221002-223258_dragy-jpg.jpg

The low boost pb previously was 7.38s 100-200 at 15psi - 3.51s 160-200kph time.
The current low boost pb at 14.5psi is 6.95s 100-200 run - 3.09s 160-200kph time.
This shows a real world gain of 0.42s when conditions are ideal. (manual change eliminated!)

The same low boost run going uphill at 14.5psi ran a 7.11s 100-200 - 3.21s 160-200kph time
So when conditions are not ideal the gains are 0.3s.

Eliminating that gear change is showing a bigger real world performance gain of upto 0.3s - 0.4s depending on conditions. (For my application, in my findings confirmed by dragy gps data). Subjectively the top end with the 4" system is better, least my dragy gps performance shows a decent gain at 1bar.

I tried testing recently at high boost and there is way too much salt on the roads, meaning no traction as i found out the hard way. 2nd gear foot flat and the rear snapped instantly around 30*. I'll need to wait a bit longer before conditions are safe enough to test.

After a while in hibernation, it was time to get back to it! Fuel prices are still shocking. Trying some of the Esso supreme stuff as it has no eth content to boost the fuel rating.

Increased boost to 18psi and noticed something wasn't right. Took a closer look at the engine bay and found the intake pipe had failed! Turbo was being choked!

Luckily caught it early and all is well. Need to get a new intake pipe and filter made up then back to the grind. Car needs a full detail as well!
