Copyninja Street FD - GT3 Build

Weather's getting colder, which means Boost season is on the way. I had to take advantage of the slightly colder conditions so I pushed the boundaries to the extreme and turned up boost to a mind-blowing 22psi (that's a jaw-dropping 1.5 bar on a 13B street port šŸ˜‚) and here's the kicker – the tune is not at its full potential, yet. Hold onto your seats in the coming weeks!šŸš€

1696191914607.png

I used 14.5psi as the baseline to compare and see if the results were worthwhile. Did not test 100-200kph yet but ran some quicker preliminary custom tests 50-90mph, 60-90mph and 60-80mph. This was to quickly test some super safe tunes. The Aim is to push up to 26psi (1.8bar) or wherever the G35-1050 stops giving dragy improvements.

Screenshot_20231001-211428_WhatsApp.jpg

The goal is to see if the turbo can deliver the juice and get 50-90mph below 3s and 60-90 below 2s.

All or most members of the UK RX7 Tribe WhatsApp group will know this! (For those not part of the group) Today, we embark on an exhilarating new journey, ushering in a new era for our passionate community.

I'm thrilled to introduce the Official RX7 Tribe 100-200kph Dragy Verified Leaderboard, and what's even more exciting is that we've already witnessed some phenomenal results. Here's the kicker - this is just the beginning! As we move forward, I invite you all to join in the conversation within the group chat, where we'll continuously update the Leaderboard with more jaw-dropping achievements. Together, we'll push the boundaries of what's possible and inspire one another to reach new heights! This helps us build and learn from tested and verified setups.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment of sharing information to help one another improve and to learn from one another mistakes, I’m not sure that whacking a ā€œcheap K20 in as I’ve failed with rotariesā€ can be classed as a ā€œverifiedā€ set up.

Not against engines swaps by the way but why not one leaderboard for swaps and another for rotaries.

I understand your point of view and many on the group share that. If we have 100s of swapped fd's and 100s of 13bs with dragy verified results, then yes we could do with separating them out and should it reach that level, rest assured the RX7 Tribe Leaderboard will be updated to reflect as much.

For the time being, as its a small UK community and we all like Gav (some of us lol) and he's part of the RX7 what app group, its fair to have his K20 swapped RX7 on there. (That being said I rejected his AWD results despite him trying šŸ˜‚). His 100-200 result is fair to have on the RX7 Leaderboard as he proved by video evidence and dragy overlay it was a single turbo K20 setup with rwd on a auto ZF8 box running circa 800hp.

If engine swapped FD's are faster than similar spec 13bs then lets welcome that but I suspect there are many 13b owners who wont let that slide and its good to have the competition! Watch this space, there are some fast 13bs yet to get on the leaderboard.

Turns out I'm running out of my 50/50 water meth mix. Below is the brand I've been using.

20230930_111150.jpg

As many of you are aware, Mazda recently raised the prices of their brand new 13B engines. I reached out to Mazda to verify, and they provided a quote of £7,250 plus VAT, amounting to a staggering £8,700, delivered within two weeks. At this rate, I imagine more owners will consider engine swaps. It wouldn't surprise me if a new 13b is 10k by the same time next year.

Taking the above into consideration, I decided to invest an additional £20.00 and went ahead with purchasing top-tier racing-grade pro methanol. This choice allows me to maintain precise control over the mix.

20231007_105533.jpg

I wont be running 100% meth injection. For now, I'm going to stick with a 50/50 water-methanol mixture. This ratio serves as a great compromise for me, providing effective cooling, while also boosting the octane rating of regular pump fuel to prevent knock, detonation, and pre-ignition.

There's a lot of issue's running 100% meth injection on rotaries with pump fuel especially with pre-ignition so I'm not gonna risk that. I may consider running a spicier mix, when I have more data on how the new 50/50 mix performs compared to the previous mix.

I hit the dyno at Garage Whifbitz to test the current setups efficiency and specially how the new G35 1050 performed.

Screenshot_20231012-175926_Gallery.jpg

Next Thursday, I'll be off with the 7 to take on Spa Francorchamps for an exhilarating track day! So this dyno session was to quickly test and tweak a few things on the setup.

Screenshot_20231012-180004_Gallery.jpg

Its no garage queen and gets driven on the regular. Still needs a good clean tho! lol

20231012_095332.jpg

My predictions were it would make
1. 380 rwhp at 1bar
2. 440-450 rwhp at higher boost.

The results were mind blowing and the overall efficiency of the entire setup surpassed my wildest expectations.

It made:
1. 400 rwhp at 1bar - super fun and still rapid on the streets!
2. 500 rwhp at 1.5bar - Scary AF!!

In all fairness, I was expecting only 450rwhp but what I achieved was waaaay beyond expectations. I'm well chuffed with the below results on a baby 13B street port and a G35 turbo! I guess Tim's street port flows exceptionally well!

Screenshot_20231012-180119_Gallery.jpg

Drove away from the dyno in one piece without issues and it looks like the new 50/50 meth mix is working really well. The entire package is cohesive and works really well as a single unit. I did not push beyond 22psi as I was chasing 450rwhp....but ended up with 500rwhp.

I am looking forward the upcoming SPA track day next week. The road trip I've planned in the 7 is over 1,500 miles and I cant wait to start this journey. Hopefully, i'll be able to get a few draggy runs in on the new high boost setting.

NGL before this I thought you had a certain level of intellect, and then I saw you have purchased Devilsown brew, I don't mean to be rude, but you know that's Literally 50/50 screen wash right? The colour is a dye?

Whats your point? I've been using this stuff for a good few years and if you had a certain level of intellect, I dont mean to be rude, but did you know that I know how it's made and still chose to use it for pure convenience?

Also I used it on todays dyno session for some of my base pulls
1. it worked great and in line with expectations, my data confirms it.
2. it is super convenient.
3. I've got nothing negative to report.

Let me guess you would rather people use 50/50 screen wash from Tescos? :ROFLMAO:

Most screen wash is like 40-50% methanol anyway if I remember right?

It's really not the same thing mate! Buy cheap buy twice! That's how the story goes.

There's significant differences between screen wash and 50/50 water meth mix.

Composition of both are wildly different:
  • Screen Wash: typically contains water, a mixture of detergents or surfactants, and some antifreeze compounds. It is designed to be safe for use on glass and painted surfaces and not designed for use inside internal combustion engines let alone a 13b.
  • 50/50 Water-Meth Mix: is a specific ratio of distilled water and pure lab or race methanol, with a food dye for the colour so you can do a quick visual check of how much you have left in the tank. Often used as an anti-knock agent and for cooling in high-performance or forced-induction engines. It is not meant for cleaning surfaces and is not safe to use in the same way as screen wash.
Using screen wash instead of a 50/50 water-meth mix in an engine specifically designed for the latter can lead to engine damage, reduced performance, safety concerns, warranty issues, and efficiency loss. Now for most FD owners, reduced performance (or sometimes no performance) is the story of our lives! We hardly have any safety concerns and warrranty? (lack there off). In terms of efficiency loss...we don't have great efficiency to begin with compared to the latest and greatest..which leaves only one (major or minor) issue depending on how deep your pockets are, engine damage!

To each their own, use whatever you want in your build. At the end of the day, if someone uses screen wash as a cheap substitute, then on the balance of probability they are very likely to also be cutting corners in other areas of their build, such as using cheap spark plugs etc etc... This can lead to engine failure, which unfairly contributes to the misconception that certain engines like the 13B are grossly unreliable.

Yeah I know that I just mean the content is actually quite surprising šŸ˜‚
By all means I work in a professional background and would recommend it to any of my customers šŸ˜‚

Apologies for the radio silence since the Dyno day! The past few months have been a whirlwind of activity and excitement, leaving me with limited time to update this thread. Life has been a bustling mix of projects, deadlines, and unexpected adventures. Rest assured, I'm eager to catch you up on all the European roadtrip in the 7 cruising through European charm and an adrenaline-fueled circuit in the iconic 7 : From the historic streets of Brussels and Bruges to the coastal vibes of Dunkirk, winding through the canals of Amsterdam, a brief visit to the Nürburgring, and embracing the legendary Spa-Francorchamps. This was a road trip that combines culture, speed, and the unmistakable roar of the rotary engine

Spotted a fellow car enthusiast on the express lane to Spa. Bit of a shame seeing such a nice car being towed to track instead of being driven. To each their own. As i'm on a road trip i'll be taking a massive a detour through the scenic route – because why not add a few extra twists, turns, and a whole lot of rotary fun to the journey? Sometimes, the scenic route is the best route!

Operation Dynamo was the evacuation of over 330,000 Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk during World War II (May 26 to June 4, 1940). Faced with German forces, the mission utilized a diverse fleet of naval and civilian vessels, successfully rescuing a significant portion of the British Expeditionary Force. The operation, known as the "Miracle of Dunkirk," marked a pivotal moment in the war, showcasing Allied resilience and adaptability.

Worth a visit if you like a bit of history...

Talked my way into thrilling passenger laps in the RS products, picking up valuable insights for tweaking the 7's setup ahead of the next Spa encounter! I need to improve the footwork of the 7, the part throttle map and especially the brakes and put the BGW back on!

The 7 survived a rainy day at Spa, turning it into an epic adventure alongside passionate owners who share, respect and have great camaraderie. I'm planning a return next year—this time with the BGW and upgraded brakes for an even better thrill!

The money shot as the 7 ascends Eau Rouge at Spa on a rainy day, daring the elements. With the GT wing conspicuously absent, it becomes a dance of balance and finesse. The rain-soaked track becomes a canvas for driver skill and the 7 maneuvers gracefully, a testament to its inherent agility.

Round 2 - A lone 7 enters an exhilarating dogfight against a duo of 991.2 GT3 RS's at Spa. An epic track and an epic car. It's such a dreamy combination!
A standout from the day, this photo brings back memories of Maverick-in-the-F14 vibes against the two 5th Gen fighters! If you know, you know!

Very cool trip, would love to do this! What level of spares did you take? Did you have a plan for any potential catastrophic failure?
How much or how little you prep will depend on the confidence you have in your 7. For me the 7 had weathered all the draggy pulls over the years, turning each challenge into a victory lap. So I gave it the royal treatment with the usual oil and coolant change, topped off with 8-10 draggy pulls and a quick 1hr dyno sesh to make sure all systems were a go.

No spares - took a small tool kit, assortment of cable ties, 5l of oil and coolant. Ended up using less than 500ml of oil and zero coolant for the entire trip. It is a strange thing to admit the 7 was the embodiment of trust and reliability.

Catastrophic failure plan - Breakdown cover for unlimited mileage to recover the 7 back to the UK and to a garage of my choice.

Track insurance - none, as Spa's roster had a lineup of cars that could rival an automotive Avengers team. If someone wiped out another it was mutually assured destruction. That being said all the drivers out there were like knights of the asphalt, valiant and sensible—no heroes trying to one-up each other.

The laps in the GT4 RS as a passenger was truly remarkable. An exceptional car for track use.

Successfully returned home without any complications. The 7 proved to be sensational on this journey. So glad with my decision to opt for the 7 over the M3.
The 7 is practically begging for a spa day šŸ˜† ! It's time for a full-blown detail inside out.

The body shop returned the wing without fixing the end plates after having it for almost a year; talk about a lasting souvenir! Oh well, it didn't take away from the road trip or the fun at Spa.

The 7 gleamed with radiance following its mini-spa day after a thorough wash and wax accompanied by a one step ceramic coat for added winter protection.

I switched out the front tires from 245/35/18 to 265/35/18 cup 2 connects and it's remarkable how this alteration has significantly improved the front end's grip in corners and braking zones. Likely slow down my draggy times....but we all know what that means...more boost!

The ultimate dream combo exuding Hella Flush vibes! Absolutely loving the way the 7 gracefully sits on the TE37 SL's, rocking 265/35/18 Cup 2s all around.

What an incredible trip, thank you for sharing the photos. I'd love to take my RX-7 to the Nurburgring but have to admit I've been a bit concerned about reliability - maybe one to investigate further once the AC is functioning!

Dont over think it...just do it when you are ready! ;)

I didnt have AC or Cruise control for this trip. It's all part of the charm.
