New FD owner, have a few questions regarding coils

I don't really understand the function of the air pump other than for the original cat so as I have no cat is it worth removing it completely?

Yes

Lots of info on this on the interweb, you'll only need some blanking plates and a new belt / possibly idler pulley

Thank you everyone for loads of great info! Certainly lots to think about regarding what to do next. My MOT is next Monday so hopefully get through that and then ditch the air pump. A couple of questions then:

1, I like the look of the under drive pulley kit from DM Motorsport as it has a ribbed/knurled edge on it. I assume this is a decent kit? There are cheap Gilmer style kits on eBay which look cool but they seem far too cheap and they're from China so I'm gonna pass on those.

2, Has any one replaced the power steering with a manual rack from an FC? Seems to be a very common conversion in the States but I am struggling to find a manual rack over here. I don't want to de-power the rack as I have done it in the past and although it handles okay it will fail MOT.

3, Kaeolian: Which solenoid did you replace? Can you link a photo so I can look for the same? If I could get it to run completely smooth I would be much happier going forwards so that I know everything is right before I pull everything off!

4, Lastly, after looking at pulleys (it would a shame to just replace the water pump one and not the full set, another reason to run a manual rack - no pulley and no additional belt now the air con has gone) I noticed that the crank pulley has adjustment on it. Mine has obviously been adjusted in the past as you can see witness marks on one side and it has now been advanced/retarded (can't remember) to the other extreme. What does this adjustment do? Surely everything is electronically controlled? Edit: After reading something else I guess this adjustment controls the split timing?

Cheers once again!

@GAVBEY Gavbey I'm sure I saw that you had a manual rack for sale recently?
Search for the under drive kit. This will replace your alternator pulley and water pump pulley. I can't remember the belt sizes off hand but I'm pretty sure there's sizes for them when you search. Dm kit was a pretty common replacement on fduk if I remember rightly!

Did you try running the exhaust open from the dp? I can't think of any solenoid that could fail to cause the dp to glow red tbh but happy to be wrong. Ign possibly and exhaust restriction likely but idling the solenoids are not really doing anything.

Spendyrx: I believe the DM kit comes with a belt and if I were to convert to manual steering I could also buy a single crank pulley and have 3 matching pulleys and only one belt.

jdmr_neil: Not yet, no. It is actually the turbos that glow and I haven't seen it in a while. I assumed it was fuel burning in the turbo and now that has calmed down it isn't as bad. I'm still going to run it on the down pipe only the next time it is on the ramp.

kaeolian: I assumed those were the solenoids you meant, I will have a hunt around to see if I can find any used.

Thanks again!
