Since there's not a thread on this yet,

What tyres do people run? I'm currently running Federal RS-R and they've proven to be great both on street and track. But I'm changing my sizes now so exploring new options with a potential bigger budget.

So they must be good on street and track whilst also being durable and not too noisy, not expecting anything amazing in the wet.

The main options that I can think of are -
Yokohama AD08r
Nankang AR-1
Nankang NS2-R
Toyo R888R
Michelin Pilotsport Cup
Federal RS-RR (I'm told these will be available in the uk soon)

So what does everyone run and what's your experience with them?

I've only used RSRs and they're great, but I'd like to try the AD08s, they're supposed to be not too bad in the wet either

I have the Nankang NS-2Rs and from a dry and wet track perspective I can't fault them. I have never been able to overheat them and they are really sticky in the dry, and in the wet they are very decent, even on the motorway in biblical weather I haven't ever lost grip. On the track in the wet they aren't fantastic but that's because you can't get heat into them.

In terms of ride comfort on the road I'm not that impressed. The sidewalls are super stuff and the compound feels pretty hard so they are a little noisy and ride hard although I have gotten used to it. When it's time to change them I will be trying out the AD08Rs or something less aggressive perhaps.

In terms of wear they have been great. I have probably done about 8,000 miles or so on them with about 5-6 track days and I think I'll still get quite a few thousand miles out of them. I don't ever try to light up the rubber though or drift, etc. so your mileage will vary.

AD08s are my main choice, I've had them before on my turbo mx5 and they were good even in the wet they were ok. I spoke to a few people at the Nurburgring who swear by them too as they last twice as long as R888s

After having this dilemma on what to fit on my FD, I went for the Michelin PS4's. The reviews are fantastic and the ratings show dry grip levels better than some "track" spec tyres, such as the RSR's. But with the added benefit of having decent wet weather performance and decent tread depth. I'll be honest, I haven't had much opportunity to see what they're like yet though, but will give my thoughts when I have :) I'm hoping they will be the perfect tyre for anyone using their FD on track and road, but isn't keen on running semi slicks in case they're caught out in a downpour on the road or wants to start off with more than 5mm of tread!

I'm going to be trying out some nexen at some point this year I've got bridgestones at the moment and they are rubbish in the wet and ok in the dry but they are quite old tyres now

Ok I've had eagle f1 originals non asymmetric, r888 and ado8r.

The eagle f1s were road tyres so can't really compete.

The 888 were great in dry and poor in the wet but didn't last very long at all. Also they were by far the most expensive.

On my second set of ado8r and they have been the best performers so far. Better than 888 in the dry. Although even worse in the wet than 888 they seem to dry quickly with the surface. With that said in standing water, forget any throttle unless you just want to slide. Better priced and last twice as long.

I'd like to try the AR-1 but have reservations about the brand. They do look capable by tread pattern but their quality has always been an issue to me.

Tyre rubber is not just tyre rubber, feel a few different types just with your hands and you can feel differences good or bad.

I'm looking at these too at the moment. They are supposed to be epic.

Let us know how you get on.

I run michelins on mine, pilot sport 4 on the front and pilot sport 2 on the rear. The reason i did this was they dont make the sizes i need in 1 type, i run 255/40x17 and 235/45x17. The grip in fantastic in the wet and dry, i did run bridgestones for a while but didnt like them in the wet and i ran dunlops for a while too and they werent very good in the wet either

I had about 6 years from toyo proxes t1rs i was running 225 front and 265 rear and now I'm on michelin ps3. Theae are 225/55/17 front and 245/50/17 on rear or something like that! They seem pretty good so far! I'm putting the cheapest set of tyres on I can find in 205/55/16 ? for castle Combe on the 2nd June ??

Got the Yokohama AD08r before a long stint down to Bristol. Got to love them! I had more confidence in them in the wet than I had with my RSR's in the dry. They were expensive but I can not complain with what I got.

I've got AD08R's and I've used them a few times before and always liked them. 888's are good in the dry as well but scarily bad in wet, particularly heavy rain, I remember a friend having on his Impreza coming home from the ring on the Autobahn in the rain and sliding between lanes at about 40mph!!!.

AD08R's now use an even stiffer steel sidewall than the old ones and so aren't as comfortable on the road but are better when pushing on.

Between us we've used RSR's and they weren't too bad but not as good as the others, I've never used the NS2R's but I know others who have been impressed.

Downside to the AD08R's is they are so much more expensive than the rest in large sizes.

I have PS4's on my daily, they are a good tyre but I never thought about putting them on the FD, but thinking about it, it's probably not a bad idea

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 will be better than most semi slicks like ad08r or the older r888 model. Federal rsrs are poo......had a set and got rid of it as the dry grip was just poo, the price reflects the performance here. My r888s were ok....the noise was shocking and the dry grip didn't blow my mind.

AD08r are probably a really good compromise but i found my new MPS4 to have similar dry grip to ad08r and the wet grip and braking performance is outrageous compared to ad08r. The mps4 is an extremely well balanced tyre and what i mean is you can go almost as fast in the wet as in the dry. Makes the fd performance more useable in all weather conditions and prevents you from getting smoked off the line by a fiesta or kia seed in the wet. haha

If i had to upgrade from my current MPS4 I would go Michelin pilot sport cup2 as that is a decent compromise tyre but the downside is it costs almost twice the price of a ps4.....The real shame is Michelin wont do the Pilotsport 4s in 17".

Don't they do the regular PS4 in 17" but not the PS4S in 17"? Also, I can't imagine these would be any good on a track day?

Michelin pilot sport 4 are a street tyre so won't be in the same league as 888 or ado8r.

I've tried street tyres and semi's on track and the difference is night and day

Spent the last couple of hours looking into the mps4 and 2 and they do look to be a very capable tyre. Like copy ninja said they are regarded as excellent for alternative conditions. Still very much a road tyre instead of a semi but with that said a true track tyre would be the a048 or the replacement a050r. I think for a street driven car that does the occasional trackday the mps4 would be a great compromise. For a purely track driven car id stick with ad08, 888 etc. Once your up to a level beyond that then advan a050r , dunlop DZ03G, R888R or the cheaper AR-1

I still think the best tyres I've tried on an FD are Toyo R1-R's. Great in the dry, great in the wet.
