faulty gearbox?

Hi gents.

These are sad times.
My Rx7 has sent me on a wild goose chase over the last 4months.

I’ve been getting these rear clunking noises ( I thought it sounded like it was coming from the rear. But the mechanic said it sounded more in the middle of the car)
I thought perhaps bushes or pillow balls.
It only happens when I turn to the right and when i reverse.

So I got a local garage to carry out some inspection to review/look at common problems I’d found on the tinternet 🤪
We found that the:

-Bushes are solid.
-PPF has no cracks.
-The drive shaft has play. it -rotates half a turn with no effort at all.

We then put the poor old girl on axel stands and lifted the ramp. .

to try simulate similar condition that make the cluck type noise happen.
So I put it into first gear and then
Aggressively released the clutch to get a shock of movement to run through the gearbox, drive shaft and diff

Which made him then noticed quite quickly that the gearbox moves to much and could well be the source of the problem.
To be specific the movement was where the driveshaft connects to the gear box.

He was quite sure this was the wild goose id been looking for 😑.
With having only the lowest level of experience within this field I have no other option but to take his word.
He did however suggest I get the gearbox refurbished at a specialist and that due to the car being an odd ball he’d prefer to steer clear.
As he’d end up losing a ramp for the duration of the fix.

Has anyone else experienced this?
I sense it’s going to be an expensive fix.
And just want to make sure his diagnosis has been experienced before and that the symptoms seem legit.

Thanks.

May be better to see if someone here can fix it! So it sounds like you're describing movement in the input shaft! Liam fd from fduk was big on his boxes, maybe worth looking at his stats on fduk and getting his email, see how close he is to you and see if he will sort you out! At least that way you know your giving it to someone that knows their way around your car and not some scumbag in a local garage that'll end up creating more problems that you don't need!

If your car is on a ramp and you engage drive the gearbox, diff and everything clunks and rattles its arse off as there is no load
