Morning all, it's been an awfully long time...

Some time ago, the clutch started playing silly buggers on my car. Exedy Twin, was fine one day, not the next. So, symptoms:

Engine off, can engage gears
Engine running, off the pedals, fine.
Engine running, foot on clutch, can't engage gears, but clutch does standard twin plate rattle.
Start car in gear, car moves forwards.
Lying under car, helper presses clutch, I can see the plates disengage and jiggle them freely with a screwdriver.

My thoughts:
Not the clutch as it disengages
Not the hydraulics as clutch disengages.
Not the box as car runs fine in neutral and can be moved forwards when started in gear

So must be something between engine and box. Has to be clutch release bearing?
Anything I'm missing?

Have you tried bleeding the slave cylinder?

Sounds like its not fully engaging.

Gear selection works when the engine is off because nothing is rotating

Cheers both.
Yup, slave seems fine. Plus the plates are loose enough to be rattled through the inspection hope when a 13 year old presses the pedal, pretty sure it's disengaging.

Didn't try starting with the foot down, good point.

Might be slightly immaterial now, engine is ready to come out, should hopefully know for sure in a few days when my old man body can be arsed to hook up the crane!
