cib24's 1999 Mazda RX-7 Type RS

And to answer your question, yes. Similar event and possibly another one in September. The low numbers and free food provided sells it for me.

Yeah sounds really good value for money (y) will have to attend one.

It's just what the track restaurant provides. Difference being you don't pay for drinks, food or chocolate bars that they sell there.

My times would get worse throughout the day with the extra weight!

Was just watching your video of the day at blyton with JayEmm and holy shit your car is quiet Roy. Great video and feedback and it looked a fab day. Hopefully i can make the next one.

Sale incoming ?

I may advertise at Japfest. Happy to listen to all of your pricing suggestions although I have one in mind!

After all that your selling!!! I dread to think how much you have spent on it. Iwish i could just through money away that easy.

GLWTS though mate and keep us posted on your next project

Blyton Park last run of the day. A lot of commentary and complaining about not being able to consistently heel & toe downshift because my feet are too big or something. My heel always smacks the plastic trim covering the fuse box or whatever down in the foot well before I can blip the gas pedal with my heel.

It's been a long time since I bothered to update this thread. As of this month I ha e had my FD for 4 years and have put about 13,000 miles on it and enjoyed it at 8 track days. The car has been good all this time with compression still mid 7s on the front rotor and high 7s on the rear rotor the last time I checked it.

Having said that a few wear and tear items had come to the fore along with an issue with boost, and it was time to get these issues rectified after having the car in storage from November to March.

A few key issues that needed doing before chasing the smaller annoyances were:
  1. Clunk in the rear suspension on the driver's side: turned out to be two of the J-Auto pillowballs that were installed at the end of 2017 and about 4,500 miles ago. They seized up and weren't moving. Replaced these with two Mazda pillowballs. The other four J-Auto pillowballs seem okay for now. It took forever to figure out these were the problem because there was no movement anywhere in my rear suspension, brakes, Ohlins, etc. When the car was on the ramp. It took Stu's intuition to pull off the control arm and physically check all of the pillowballs to find it.
  2. New tyres: I wanted to change from the Nankangs to something more street oriented, softer riding and a little quieter. The Nankangs have been on the car for at least 10,000-11,000 of those miles and all of the track days, and must still have 5,000 miles plus 2-3 light track days left in them so they have worn really well. I have swapped to Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres (not S) and so far so good. The ride quality is better and the tyres are a little quieter at 80mph. I will be interested to see how they hold up on a track day and how they grip in all weather conditions.
  3. Brake pads: I have run the Project My HC+ pads for the last 10,000-11,000 miles alongside the Nankangs and they are pretty great. They wore so well and probably had another track day and 2,000-3,000 miles left in them. I was going to stay with the same but the cost of doing so was pretty crazy for brake pads given they would need to be imported again. So, I asked Stu and he advised Ferodo DS2500s in front and Stoptech pads in the rear. the combo was about half the price of buying a new set of Project Mu pads so I went with it and so far so good. Really good initial bite and a strong pedal so I'm looking forward to seeing how it does at Blyton Park in July.
  4. Boost issues: In the latter half of 2018 my car started to exhibit some odd boost behaviour in that it wouldn't hold 1.05 bar unless you fed the throttle in a very particular way, and often it just simply would not get there and would be stuck at 0.8-0.9 bar. Turns out a solenoid in the black box was bad and a connection on another had broke, so a few new hoses, a new solenoid, and it now holds 1.05 bar. However, we are still chasing a slow spool up issue whereby the primary is not hitting full boost until about 2500 RPM. An issue to iron out on another day as the twins were previously seeing full boost somewhere around 2200-2300. At least the car holds post to redline and the transition in 2nd and 3rd is excellent whilst in 4th it dips to 0.8 bar before resetting to 1.0 bar.
The important thing is that I can take the car to Japfest and drive it as much as I please until it goes back to Rotor Torque for a few more interesting bits while I also order a few pieces from Japan to tidy up this and that.

Stu is sending off two sets of 99-spec twins for a rebuild as I am dying to get 99s back on my car running a bar. When those twins are back the car will go back to Rotor Torque to swap I'm the 99s and update the tune. However, I also got busy and bought a Knight Sports intake for the twins but it doesn't quite fit so we will be mocking up a mould of the unit and modifying that to fit my car, and then we will ensure we touch up things like the elbow, top of the Greddy and the new intake with a fresh OEM look when we get it all together. Hopefully, we end up with slightly lower intake temps, better flow because the Knight Sports unit uses a 6" K&N cone filter, and the engine bay looks brand new and how I have always wanted it.

The goal is to get the twins and the intake swap done before Bottom Park on 5th July.

Most importantly, I am just excited to be able to drive the car again and enjoy it without little foibles ruining the experience. Perhaps I can stop looking at replacements for the FD and enjoy another summer and fall with this car.

A little update with a few photos. The car has been amazing since I bought it back in April 2015 with no real issues during my ownership other than needing to replace wear and tear items. Generally, I drive the car around on the weekends for either early morning joy rides or even trips to Tesco and B&Q as it's my only mode of private transport. Having said that, I don't put as many miles on it as I used to since I don't need to drive it everywhere but I do still try to enjoy it and last month we had a rotary track day hosted by Magnitude Events and painstakingly put together by myself. We managed to get 24 cars signed up which included a near even mix of RX-7s and RX-8s and had a great time.

I wanted to pose a few photos of my car from the day as I'm very proud of how they came out.

Dropped off my car at @Stu Rotortorque shop about a week ago for some work. I have been running on a good used set of early spec twins since 2015 when my 99s on my car started chucking oil. I kept my 99s but the manifold was in pretty bad shape so it took me until earlier this year to find another set that needed a rebuild, but one that had a nearly flawless manifold minus one crack. I bought that set and then had both sets of twins sent off to Midland Turbo and told them to rebuild the best set out of the two sets.

Anyway, the new twins are now on the car, and all we are waiting for is my custom intake to be completed out of carbon fibre which is designed to look similar to a Knight Sports or Auto Exe unit, but fit perfectly around the Greddy SMIC. Following that, the car will be mapped and I'll have it ready for the 5th September Snetterton track day.

I also had Stu and Jay compression test the motor to confirm all was good as it has been 22 months and c.7,000 miles since they last tested it, of which it was on a Jaydee map and being thrashed around circuits and being subjected to tons of heatsoak and all the rest from street driving in summer with a factory bonnet and stock location intercooler! Also, I have been driving around on the same motor for 17,000 miles over the last 4 years (no idea when it was rebuilt in Japan either or if it even has been) and wanted to see at what rate the engine was wearing out.

Well, I was very surprised by my results as they actually improved from 22 months ago and are in some ways on par or better than when I originally bought the car and had it tested at the time of purchase by Hayward Rotary in 2015.

When I first got the car in April 2015 it tested as follows. This was the day after purchasing the car and it was running on the stock ECU.
Front rotor: 7.7, 7.6, 7.6
Rear rotor: 8.0, 8.0, 8.0

About 10,000 miles and 2.5 years later in October 2017 I took the car to Stu and Jay for a remap and some work and it tested as follows. At this point in time it had been running on a Hayward Rotary map and I had also done 4 track days on a stock intercooler and 0.8 bar of boost.
Front rotor: 7.4, 7.5, 7.5
Rear rotor: 7.7, 7.7, 7.8

Last week, another 7,000 miles and 22 months later. Jaydee map with current modifications, a couple more track days, dyno runs, and way more driving around for errands to Tesco and B&Q after moving out of Central London.
Front rotor: 7.7, 7.8, 7.9
Rear rotor: 7.8, 7.8, 7.9

Keen to see this new custom intake (y).

You'll love the '99's, be interesting to see how much difference they make to the graphs as otherwise, your spec is pretty consistent.
