Hi all, as ive not used my FD for the last year or more i've got a wee bit of rust just appearing on the rear bootlid. naturally i need to sort it before it progresses much more in the view to probably sell the car or fall back in love with it

Is the rear window boot seal glued or bonded in anyway, or does it have any plastic mouldings in behind which clip it in? Naturally i dont want to buy another at £120.00 if i can avoid it as theres nothing wrong with this one.

Does the joiner at the bottom slide to the side to come away from the seal or just pull it? (picture 2)

Can i just start pealing it away from the glass slowly? (like in picture 3)

thanks in advance

The joiner slides one way more than the othert so you can get it off, can't remeber which way, it's most likely full of gunk under it though, so see if you can clean under it bifere you try to remove it.

The trim is just pressed in, it's not a seal, just cosmetic.

You could try and peel the edge back and tape it back to the glass to keep it out of the way. If this doesn't give you enough access, I'd remove the window.

The trim has a groove and the glass sits in that groove to locate it. A big bead of urethane is then squirted all around the hatch and the hatch glass is placed on top, covering the sealing area and the trim, holding it all in place. If fitted properly then removing the seal from the urethane intact will be difficult as it sticks immensely well, personally I'd just pull the whole window. The rear window isn't too bad to remove, it's the front that's more of a pain..

Never push with much pressure on the glass, just gently cut from the inside with a new extendable snap-off blade stanley knife (So you can extend it out a few clicks to get in deep enough), keeping the angle such that you will not damage the seal and take your time (y).

You can buy urethane kits for putting the window back in, I used a Dinitrol one for both my windows and that worked good in a normal hand-operated silicone sealant gun, just be careful what you get it on as it basically never comes off anything. Definite gloves job! With the window out you can trim most of the old urethane off the seal and make it good to refit. Leave some urethane on the hatch, just a small layer, urethane bonds best to old urethane.

Excellent and very informative replies chaps, really appreciate you both taking the time to reply. That's answered all my questions 👍
