How to remove stock turbo pack without removing engine?

Hi guys,

As the title may suggest, I need to remove my turbo pack from my car (I got another refurbed and I want to stick it in) but I can't figure out how to remove it all without having to take the engine out of the engine bay.

I've removed the bolts as pictured here (except for one bastard but that doesn't seem to want to come off as the socket keeps slipping off the head - the top right one if you look at the picture on the link): https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generat...stock-twin-turbo-nuts-bolts-locations-485829/ but I'm now stuck with removing the downpipe from the turbo pack as it hits the engine bay and can't get passed the lugs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Haha would have been easier taking the engine out ? although it's been a long time since I've done that, I read the other day it's easier to take off the nuts that mount the engine to the subframe and lift the engine. Apparently you can access things easier. Also they undone the steering rod from the steering wheel to the rack as that helps with access ?

I didn't find it a bad job once you got going with the engine in. With all the horror stories id read i was pleasantly surprised. Firstly you need to get the dp off and out the way altogether. I just got a podger bar and kept prising a little at a time and wiggled it past the steering rod. The proper ways are as spendy listed above. The podger is handy when you come to lift the turbos out from the top too.

Right, so eitherway, the engine needs to be shifted to the side a little bit then. This should be fun.....

Thanks so far.

It’s actually quicker to pull the engine, or atleast unbolt it from the subframe so you can get more clearance. Everything is tough to get to and those rusted bolts you need good leverage to attack em.

Yeah just undo the two nuts on the engine mounts and jack the engine up from under neath about an inch or 2. That should give you enough clearance to get them out

Will take 4-6hours to get the twins off you first time. Second time about 2 hours.

It's defo easier than taking the engine out

Haha I just pulled the engine last time then stripped them down on the hoist! But saying that I had other bits to do also, ra omp went on and blanked what wasnt needed in the rats nest and a set of braided omp lines went on and what's really funny is 2 years later I've still not set up a reservoir for the ra lol. I should have just blanked and premixed pmsl.

Haha what's that si? Top mounts subframe prop and then lift? Sound easy. Just need some strong fuckers to lift the car lol

I've never needed to jack the engine up, I've always been able to get them out just by removing the steering linkage.

That said it is a total bastard to get the splines to line up straight again.

Yeah, I really didn't want to take that apart but by removing the engine mount nuts and jacking the turbo side of the engine up from underneath using my hydraulic jack and then using a massive steel bar to lever the last little bit of the engine out of the way, things came off quite easily - no engine lift required at all.

I think the biggest help for me was the steering column. If you get that out there of the way it's not so bad.
