I had front bumper and wing repainted. Unfortunately this has highlighted the fact the rest of the car is yellowed and looks crap.

I was thinking it might need some drastic work. So I was going to start at 1500 - 2000 then 3000 grit.

Go over with carlack compound

Then maybe ceramic coat it if it turns out well?

Is anyone able to give me any advice? Is the clear coat thick enough to go through a sand and compound?

Before you start wet sanding, i'd be going over it with a DA or similar with some compound - just make sure the paint is fully decontaminated before you start. If you don't have prior experience please practice on a spare panel or pay someone. I've seen nice cars be turned into a complete mess through someone attempting to DIY. With regards to paint thickness this can only be measured by an actual paint thickness tester. This is only an estimate as most testers only measure the total thickness of the paint and not how much lacquer, basecoat and primer there is individually.

Ceramic coating is all in the prep and application as to how well it works. Once again, i'd be paying a professional.

I have been wondering the same as mine could do with a good compounding (maybe not as drastic as the sanding). I have noticed that the paint marks very easily so the clear coat is either very soft or very thin, on mine at least.

I haven't been brave enough to try it...

Japanese car manufacturers are reknown for having soft paint. I had a Honda Civic once and all you had to do was look at it and it swirled.

Ok I have colour sanded before I'm not worried. I'll try the DA and compound first.

I'm going to assume like my old Honda the rx7 has very thin /soft paint.

I want to learn because someone quoted me 400 pounds. It also gives me something to do. Even if I cock it all up. Oh well it's a respray

My plan is.

Foam wash
Fallout remover over the whole car.
Another foam wash.
Clay bar
Final foam wash
Carlack compound. Foam pad
Megs polish - soft Finishing pad

Assessment of how bright I manage to get it. Decide if it's worth ceramic coating or just wait a few months and get it painted.

If you're wet sanding start fine and see how that goes, you can always move to a courser paper

Don't fuck around with Carlack or other cheap shit.

This Menzerna is so good you can even polish by hand to test the waters before you go full hog with a DA.

You know there's so many potions these days. Can't say I've heard of it.

previously I've had great results just using meguires stuff. Might just use that again.

I would start simply first bud. Try the wash and clay bar them polish it with what you have already. No point in spending on new or possibly better products if you don't need to. The lacquer is often very thin...if there is any..my car always left the mop head red....I painted the bonnet, wings and front bumper the DA the whole car and got it laquered
