Copyninja Street FD - GT3 Build

Updates:

FD rebuild progress is slow as still considering if

1. I Remain rotary and risk another rebuild and then it blows anyway because rotary!

2. Swap out the engine altogether for something special.

Only thinking of swapping out for a V10 S85 motor and SC to a reliable 700Bhp or a healthy 560hp NA. (Dont believe a 2 rotor remains a reliable option at either of these power levels long term; correct me if im wrong. One guy in america is on his 4th 2 rotor engine trying to get to 700bhp).

I've also been considering a 26b swap but I dont think its a reliable option for me and because rotary; more than likely the smallest issue will end it. So I'm leaning towards a more sensible and practical option - Enter the V10 S85 motor from BMW M division as a great alternative to a 26b swap.

I think the FD is a very special car so a 26b or v10 which sounds like an F1 car of old on full chat will do the RX7 Justice. Additional benefits I feel the V10 swap will offer over the 26b rotary is:
1 Pass mot
2. Easily rev to 8500-9krpm. Makes it more special IMO and adds another layer of enjoyment.
3. Return decent mpgs.
4. Less maintainence and greater reliability than a 26b
5. Daily Driveable

Im speaking to Craig about this and the only issue is...he's not 100% sure IF the V10

1. Fits the Rx7 engine bay....Watch this space....Ideally i want it to fit

Certainly dont want a boring LS swap...with a motor that only revs to 5 or 6krpm and with Cams ive heard it can go to 7krpm. Plus the sound puts me of the LS engine...all soo gurgly and burbly. I want a more exotic sounding engine. However there is no doubt the LS3 is also a real contender here but the sound and the low rpm redline 6krpm put me off it. However Craig highly recommends this swap.

Driftworks built a v10 Swapped M3 some time ago and it sounds insane. 26b sound without any drawbacks and Daily drive reliability to boot.

In the mean time loving the E92 M3. The NA V8 reving to 8500rpm is supremely addictive, cant get enough and the throttle response is insane. Absolutely love it.

I do miss my rx7 a lot and some aspects of the driving experience cannot be touched by the M3; so I cannot wait to get it back on the road whether it remains rotary or not!

Whats your thoughts; Keep it rotary or S85 V10 Swap?

I think it depends how deep your pockets are and what you are actually gonna use it for?

If it’s just track days and road driving is a 400-450bhp 13b not enough? I’m sure after that driver skill and handling modifications would be better than a 500+ plus fd.

If you afford it then go nuts man 😂 otherwise just run a street ported single tub 13b

@rob fd will give you the LS info... Freedom time!!!

All very good points. Im looking at this as a long termer....so instead of consistently spending on a 13b rebuild/ownership upkeep every 5-10kmiles or whenever or whatever decides to end a rotary as even the best built ones will need a rebuild every few years or sooner if you toast one on a track day.

Im already on a large street porte and single on a rebuilt engine under 3k miles which went poof.

In Fairness to a rotary my 1st 13b stock port on 0.9 bar lasted 4 years of abuse without any issues...until it threw a tip. I must have done less than 15k miles on that engine which is not great reliability and it was no faster than a stock e46 m3 on a side by side rolling pull in the real world. Pips dyno stated my rx7 running 410bhp and it was no faster than a stock e46 m3.

My 2nd large street ported engine def felt faster but was beaten by a stock F10 m5 on a side by side rolling pull with the M5 gaining ground and pulling away.

Id like to keep it rotary but i hear no tales of any rotary owners with 400-450bhp doing 50 or 60k miles on the same engine. Im already on my 3rd rotary engine should i decide to keep it rotary....so no longer a question of what i will use it for....more of a question can I use it because rotary.

I don’t think a 500bhp rotary engine is every gonna last 50-60k man

Either run it stock and hope for 50-60k miles or go wild 500-600 and accept you’ll be doing 2000-5000 miles a year and enjoy for say 5 years then rebuild time lol

The engine was design for what 270-80bhp, doubling the power will always cause issues.

Is a shit situation but is what it is I guess buddy.

Maybe just v8 the fucker and be happy then lol

@rob fd has is LS3 in his eBay basket I think 😂☺️

Even my 400bhp 13b engine wouldn't last more than 15k miles....so that says it all and there was no expense spared on maintenance and upkeep. Running low boost .85bar and mapped conservatively by Pip. would like to be proven wrong if fellow fd owners have had better luck/reliability.

Nah stock twins is even worse never ever will I be reverting to stock twins setup. My first stock twins fd was a nightmare.

Im not keen on a ls swap due to the low revving nature of those engines. Not saying they dont make enough power/torque but shifting up at 6krpm is boring for me. Also not a big fan of the burbly/gurgly lazy v8 soundtrack. This is Plan C :ROFLMAO:

However there is a V8 im considering and that is the s65 V8 from the e92 m3 which revs to 8400rpm and has a nice linear powerband which should be useable in a rx7 chassis. This would be my 2nd choice of engine swap. Stock ones make 414bhp and 285 lb ft torque. The power and torque figures are nothing to write home about. However owing an E92 M3 and having a real experience of this engine in a heavy tub of lard weighing 1650kgs and still being so fast and responsive. I can only imagine this engine will be amazing in the rx7.

Ideally a V10 s85 revving to 8300rpm is my 1st choice. The FD engine bay is massive...so hoping it should fit. Stock form the power is 500bhp and 385 lb ft torque...which is more than enough for me. Biggest win here is the insane F1 soundtrack on full chat. Wonder if it will be the 1st V10 FD RX7 in the UK/Europe?

I know someone else who wants to put their v10 in their fd so you better be quick! 👀😂 lol

Thought I'd update as we are all in lock down.

Some will be pleased to know the engine is still rotary.
Built by Tim at RX Motors
Large extended street port
Fully Studded
Goopy Apex seals
Built to handle over 500hp.

Tim will send over some pics soon but the engine is built and installed!

I have upgraded ECU to Link G4+ with the intention of running a windows tablet.

I need to source some oil cooler asap as thats the final piece of this puzzle!

In the meantime I've been driving my E92 M3 V8. Completely different experience to my RX7. More comfy, grown up and different world of refinement! Practical as well!

Apologies for the lack of RX7 content, I can assure you it is coming. Plans are once engine is run in and mapped. All running well.
Next step would be to overhaul underside and interior.

I wouldn’t call myself a purist when it comes to engine swaps and fully understand why people swap out the rotary but the RX7 is not the same car without a rotary in my opinion so I’m glad to see you are sticking with it.

I think you’ll find that with the Link ECU and a proper tune you’ll find more reliability, plenty of safety features with more modern ECU which should help.

Like you I’ve got a modern German car for reliability, comfort and day to day driving and then the FD with a rotary for the drama, blood, sweat and tears. 😂

Looking forward to seeing your FD moving under rotary power again. 👍

I do like the rotary engine but I completely understand why people would go down a v8 path. While it may change the dynamics of the original rx7....I can appreciate its got a place.

I was on the cusp of swapping it all out hahah! S85 V10 RX7....I might still build one hahah!

Anyways it is still rotary and Tim has assured me with the new engine setup I will enjoy many years of brapps! Like you said the link g4 should help too.

Im looking forward to having the rx7 back. However with everything going on right now with the world in lockdown...its almost bitter sweet!

Just need to find a decent set of oil coolers to finish the final piece of the puzzle and that should be it!
