I think it depends how deep your pockets are and what you are actually gonna use it for?
If it’s just track days and road driving is a 400-450bhp 13b not enough? I’m sure after that driver skill and handling modifications would be better than a 500+ plus fd.
If you afford it then go nuts manotherwise just run a street ported single tub 13b
@rob fd will give you the LS info... Freedom time!!!

All very good points. Im looking at this as a long termer....so instead of consistently spending on a 13b rebuild/ownership upkeep every 5-10kmiles or whenever or whatever decides to end a rotary as even the best built ones will need a rebuild every few years or sooner if you toast one on a track day.
Im already on a large street porte and single on a rebuilt engine under 3k miles which went poof.
In Fairness to a rotary my 1st 13b stock port on 0.9 bar lasted 4 years of abuse without any issues...until it threw a tip. I must have done less than 15k miles on that engine which is not great reliability and it was no faster than a stock e46 m3 on a side by side rolling pull in the real world. Pips dyno stated my rx7 running 410bhp and it was no faster than a stock e46 m3.
My 2nd large street ported engine def felt faster but was beaten by a stock F10 m5 on a side by side rolling pull with the M5 gaining ground and pulling away.
Id like to keep it rotary but i hear no tales of any rotary owners with 400-450bhp doing 50 or 60k miles on the same engine. Im already on my 3rd rotary engine should i decide to keep it rotary....so no longer a question of what i will use it for....more of a question can I use it because rotary.![]()
I don’t think a 500bhp rotary engine is every gonna last 50-60k man
Either run it stock and hope for 50-60k miles or go wild 500-600 and accept you’ll be doing 2000-5000 miles a year and enjoy for say 5 years then rebuild time lol
The engine was design for what 270-80bhp, doubling the power will always cause issues.
Is a shit situation but is what it is I guess buddy.
Maybe just v8 the fucker and be happy then lol
@rob fd has is LS3 in his eBay basket I think☺
K20 turbo it

Even my 400bhp 13b engine wouldn't last more than 15k miles....so that says it all and there was no expense spared on maintenance and upkeep. Running low boost .85bar and mapped conservatively by Pip. would like to be proven wrong if fellow fd owners have had better luck/reliability.
Nah stock twins is even worse never ever will I be reverting to stock twins setup. My first stock twins fd was a nightmare.
Im not keen on a ls swap due to the low revving nature of those engines. Not saying they dont make enough power/torque but shifting up at 6krpm is boring for me. Also not a big fan of the burbly/gurgly lazy v8 soundtrack. This is Plan C
However there is a V8 im considering and that is the s65 V8 from the e92 m3 which revs to 8400rpm and has a nice linear powerband which should be useable in a rx7 chassis. This would be my 2nd choice of engine swap. Stock ones make 414bhp and 285 lb ft torque. The power and torque figures are nothing to write home about. However owing an E92 M3 and having a real experience of this engine in a heavy tub of lard weighing 1650kgs and still being so fast and responsive. I can only imagine this engine will be amazing in the rx7.
Ideally a V10 s85 revving to 8300rpm is my 1st choice. The FD engine bay is massive...so hoping it should fit. Stock form the power is 500bhp and 385 lb ft torque...which is more than enough for me. Biggest win here is the insane F1 soundtrack on full chat. Wonder if it will be the 1st V10 FD RX7 in the UK/Europe?
Watch this space.....
I know someone else who wants to put their v10 in their fd so you better be quick!lol
I wouldn’t call myself a purist when it comes to engine swaps and fully understand why people swap out the rotary but the RX7 is not the same car without a rotary in my opinion so I’m glad to see you are sticking with it.
I think you’ll find that with the Link ECU and a proper tune you’ll find more reliability, plenty of safety features with more modern ECU which should help.
Like you I’ve got a modern German car for reliability, comfort and day to day driving and then the FD with a rotary for the drama, blood, sweat and tears.
Looking forward to seeing your FD moving under rotary power again.![]()
