OK gang I've had a ra 2 stroke omp adapter on my car for about 3 years! I still have no res on it and have been premixing since the cars been on the road for 2 years!
I'm using 15/40 mineral oil (I think lol its usually what I use) and have read about people using fully synthetic for premixing! My views are that as long as there's oil in there while things are spinning that's all that matters but......

For you premixers who use fully synth, what's your personal reason for it?

Disclaimer: before people start saying you should use this and you should use that (there's always one) I don't wanna hear what people should be using, I just want to here their personal reason for using fully synth. I'm not gonna criticise, I just want to try decide if I want to go synthetic or stick to what I know 😎

Just to make sure I understand the question, you mean fully synth as the normal engine oil, not the premix?

For my car I personally use this:
Gulf Competition 5w-40 Racing Ester Fully Synthetic Engine Oil

Two reasons: One the car is enough of a money pit anyway, so no point skimping when it comes to the oil, Two it was recommended by my engine builder when I said I would be deleting the OMP.

This topic is covered extensively.

2 basics:
  • Modern fully synthetic oils have much better lubrication characteristics and service life than traditional mineral oils.
  • Modern fully synthetic oils have a much higher burn point than mineral oils.
What this means in short is, if you run an OMP, dont run fully synthetic because your car will be injecting this into the combustion chamber and it wont burn completely leaving residue. If you arent running OMP, do what you want.

Lots of people say oil is oil is oil but there are some differences in premium fully synths, i just opt for certified stuff thats on deals at the time and change it regularly.

Yeah that's right wardy, Engine oil 😆
Don't get me wrong, if was covering silly miles a year or taking the fd to the track 5 pr 6 times a year then I'd seriously be using high grade oil! I understand the importance of it in that respect! I usually only cover a thousand miles a year if that, in my fd and change the oil every year! Don't get me wrong, I don't put utter shit in my engine, I usually use the triple qx stuff from euro car parts and change every year! I just wondered if it was worth using fully synthetic with no omp!
Cheers for the replies 👍

Ive used 15w40 halfords for years, track the lot and when ive pulled my engine with brand new bearings on it there was zero wear which is what you would exspect.

The pros on a rotary engine would be less wear on oil control rings with a fully synthetic oil but thats as far as the engine oil really goes as the rest is lubricated via the premix.

I tend to use 5W30 semi synthetic halfords engine oil and exol ultima premix.

My engines dont seem to last but its never down to lubrication. generally down to map sensor pipes blowing off or dogey machine shops taking off chrome coatings haha. I should know better by now but im always out to save a penny or two. .Im scottish ok. its in my nature :D

So In my experience... im going to say oil is oil. and as long as its not cooked, and changed regularly id say you'd be fine.

Are the e-shaft bearings, oil pump, gubbins under the front cover, etc not all lubricated by the sump oil as well? If so, they're pretty important.

I use Fuchs fully synth. Cheap enough, meets the necessary specs, and always came out well in the oil analysis a club I used to belong to ran.
However, bear in mind that the properties of oil in a rotary are pretty quickly compromised due to the fuel dilution. When I dumped it out of mine last time it smelt like a Shell forecourt.

Fully synths have higher sheer resistance and deal with higher temperatures much better, both things you want in an engine that runs hot and has a problem with fuel in the oil.

There's absolutely no reason not to run a fully synth oil in an engine that is premixed.

Haha brilliant si....I know exactly what you mean 😂 mine always stinks of petrol 😂😂
Wow this must be the friendliest oil conversation ever 😂
Cheers lads.
Keep em coming 😆

t.

yeah like i said these were all brand new before build and were completely un touched after various dyno days, track driving and generally kicking its arse. :)

hence mentioning fully synthetic would mainly benafit at the hot parts of the engine ie rotor oil control rings. Oil also is burnt up inside the rotors however thi sis more cooling that lubrication :)

I only use 10w40 A3/B4. No specific brand but at the minute I have used Petronas.

As long as A3/B4 you should be fine. I read somewhere 5w30 is far too thin for the bearings. So ill just stick to what Mazda said I should put in

I've always used 10-40 mineral for a few reasons

1, it's cheap as fuck, and always available
2, my built engine was originally recommended it
3, it always comes out clean every couple of K.
4. My theory is its a 40yr old designed engine, designed for mineral. Not modern day super duper super synthetic.

Anyway I buy that shit for our family S5 and it costs a fortune so fuck buying it for my 94 banger .
