Hi all, finally got in the garage this weekend and fired up the FD for the first time this year.

She started fine from cold after pre-checks and I noticed that she seemed really noisy (more than normal) I have attached a short clip to see if anybody can help out. She starts fine HOT and cold as I did a couple of 95°c starts with an intake temp around 60°c.

My setup is nearly standard still on twins with apexi ecu and mapped.

It sounds like the exhaust is blowing to but not really sure. Fingers crossed its not rebulid time.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Sounds to me like a blown gasket exhaust side. Maybe downpipe manifold gasket

Put your hand over your exhaust when strated cold if you can! That'll tell you if you got a blow! Could check your map sensor pipe too? I doubt its that but worth a check when car runs minging!

Thanks for the info but my hands not big enough ? will check the map sensor pipe but that's not been touched for years.

Cheers

Thanks for the info about the exhaust gaskets leaking I will get it booked in at WGT for them to sort soon as possible as I don't have the tools for that.

It’s either the exhaust or intake gasket leaking. Either way you better be sat down when pip gives you the cost to fix! May be worth getting a few gaskets done at the same time if it turns out that is the case

Mine hadnt in 10years but came off surprisingly well. Is also probably the best learning curve you can have with a fd imo. Only thing to consider is you will likely find other stuff you want to replace along the way.

Tbh water and oil connections are all pretty accessible and I didn't drain either beforehand. They are high up enough so you don't lose much, ok a bit of coolant but nothing that cant be topped up easily. After that is just bolts, a decent socket set and wd40 and your done. I would say a good day to remove and the same again to

Cheers for the the vote of confidence I am ok with bolt off and bolt on stuff but on things like this I would not know where to start! and that's normally where it all goes wrong for me LOL.

Just check its not another part of the exhaust too, probably need to get it on axle stands and have a good look at the exhaust whist its running.

to test the exhaust just get a large rag/cloth place it over the exhaust pipe and hold it there (idealy getting a friend to do it ) then get your head around the engine bay and under the car, if its blowing it will get a lot louder and you should be able to track the area this way.

Potato stuffed up there works too ;) although has better special effects
