While taking the oil line off to sort a leak out on the line elbow going into the oil cooler the thread from the cooler was
in pretty bad condition, while trying to fit a new elbow the threaded piece from the cooler snapped, leaving the cooler unusable,
this snapped off with minimal pressure applied.

Being 25 miles from home at the time without a cooler is not the best best situation to be in, not being able to source a rx7 cooler
the guy had a rx8 cooler which was cleaned out an in pretty good condition so after making up a couple of brackets the rx8
cooler was fitted.

Question is, will the rx8 cooler be alright if I leave it on or do I need to get a rx7 cooler fitted if so why ?

.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually a worthwhile improvement. Rx8 engines the oil flow is actually more important in a renesis than a fd so the oil cooler would likely be more efficient.

Ah nice! Keep us posted on how the oil coolers go! Although i have spare fd coolers, I also have 2 rx8 coolers but was under the impression they wouldn't work on the fd!

Why did you think they wouldnt work mate? I'm fairly sure they are not a straight fit but an oil cooler is an oil cooler right??

Just asking as I'm not 100% sure myself

I would have thought the same. Basically the same size as each other from my rough eyeballing experience of taking front bumpers off both cars.

What temp is the inbuilt thermostat on the rx8 coolers? Providing the passages look similarly sized I can't see it causing any issues with regards to restrictions etc. I'd think the oil requirement of an 8 is about as close to a 7 as you'd find. Although personally, I'd source an rx-7 cooler, they're pretty common.

Not sure neil, i think I put a post up about it before and it was a big no no! May have dreamt it 😂

I can't see why, is just a heat exchanger with a thermostat as flow control.

Should be all good mate, let us know how you get on

Could be a cheap popular track mod you have stumbled upon.

I'm not 100% sure rx8s have an inbuilt thermostat, seems daft to me that it wouldn't. google RX8 mouse mat mod, beggars belief somethings they come up with.

the only is nige would be the brackets! I think the holes are even in the same place!

Yep i loved that idea. The mouse mat mod was one of the greatest.

Just my input, rx8 coolers do have inbuilt thermostats and ive fitted one on the right as i only had the one cooler and it works fine. Also its one or two rows bigger than the 7 cooler.

And the ports are m18 x 1.5, not m22 x 1.5 as in the 7 coolers but this wont have much of an effect if any on flow as its only a short distance.

I only fitted one on the right side and all my pipe work is braided ptfe hose and alloy fittings.

So it wouldnt work with oem pipe work as the rx8 coolers are m18x1.5 and the rx7 are m22x.1.5 threads.

It would be easier to make new pipes to and benificial too due to the age of most of these cars.
