Octane Boosters

Evening Gentlemen,

Hope you are all keeping well in these troubled times.

I was thinking about octane boosters lately as preventative maintenance for our rx7s? Coming in and out of lockdowns constantly I wonder how good the 99 super unleaded really is these days from tescos or shell respectively. For the one's of us with a single turbo mapped on 99 unleaded fuel...and potentially running a premix (which no doubt lowers the octane rating), I wonder if anyone is actually running octane booters like this or this or this.

No matter how good the mapper is, if you are unlucky enough to top up with a bad batch of 99 unleaded it could worst case end up in a rebuild costing ££££'s over a £20.00 octane booster for preventative maintenance to prevent knock, det etc ....

Has anyone got any decent recommendations for well known octane boosters which work?

Don't need them with a k20 yo 🤣 i wouldn't trust any kind of octane boost purely because you trust a pump, but whats to say thats right?
Going back when I had my fd on stock ecu and twins, I ran 95 for months as a daily and had no trouble!

You dont really push much timing on a rx7. Heat is whats most likely to cause pre detonation on a rotary. Water injection to keep temps under control is all you really need and just use momentum or v power.

Try to stick with shell, esso, and bp. The supermarket supers are known to mix with quite a lot of additives to achieve the ron rating but still 99% of people never have a problem.

Tbh me personally, premix was the only thing I've added to my fuel and it made the car run shit and i believe contributed to my fuel pump dying.

Hahah :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: that being said my mates on his 3rd K20 engine . Good thing is they are cheap af to replace! So you can go through 5 k20 engines and it only cost the same a 1 rotary engine rebuild .

Yh for stock twins and stock ecu thats fine, Im fairly confident it wont work on my setup or any single turbo setup...just asking for trouble running 95 unless its mapped on that!

I've got water injection on mine but does that alone account for pre det, knock etc on a potentially batch batch of shell or momentum 99?

Yup i use shell v power as thats what the car was mapped on..

Im using 700ml of premix with a full tank of fuel as recommend by the engine builder and mapper. Car seems to run just fine to be honest, pulls like a train, I'm on a link g4+ ecu so it monitors fuel pressure constantly and if it detects a drop in pressure it can put the engine into limp mode as a safety parameter if used.

I'm no engineer so not sure how much this effects the octane rating of the 99 v power. I will be on water injection but there's no real way of telling the fuel you put in is good or if one is unlucky enough to put in a bad batch of 99 fuel...would an octane booster provided a lil additional safety net? if these things even work!?!

The more premix the less the octane the more chance of det. Its all relative but premix didn't work for me
