AN & NPT fitting thread size chart

So if you wanted to buy regular barbed fittings to install in your typical 6AN application, the thread diameter is SAE 9/16 with 18 threads per inch. For those that don't know, the number before the "AN" indicates how many 16ths outer diameter the intended hose is supposed to be, nominally. So 4AN = 4/16" = 1/4" hose for example.

Useful, I have a webiste bookmarked at work which has all the specs of bsp, witworth, etc threads. very interesting read, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night.

I'll post it on Monday.

I've lost count the number of times I've googled 'AN thread sizing chart'

Also note that AN and JIC standards are interchangable.
yep although you have to watch as some fittings can have a 37Deg taper and some can have 45deg. If thread and taper is the same they will seal great. As much as i hate AN fittings for leaks and fake fittings etc they are handy if your taking parts or engines out regularly for maintenance .

I think all JIC are a 37 flare aren't they? It's when they're described as SAE they can be either SAE37 or SAE45.

You rarely find non-aluminium AN fittings whereas JIC are often steel, so if like me you're a ham fisted spaz it's a lot harder to stretch the threads.

Indeed they are both 37 degree flares using the same thread sizes. AN fittings just have a higher thread class and meet whatever Mil Spec.

At the low end of the market I'd bet my mortgage that "AN" fittings are just JIC standard (at best) in Aluminium, not that it really matters on most cars.
